Your pre-call checklist

  1. Camera: press Start webcam test. You should see yourself within a second or two.
  2. Light: the Light reading should say Good. Face a window or lamp, not away from it.
  3. Framing: eyes about a third from the top of the picture, camera at eye height.
  4. Microphone: press Start mic test and speak. The green bar should move with your voice.
  5. Sound check: record 5 seconds and listen. Check for echo, hum or a muffled voice.
  6. Speakers: make sure you can hear others with the speaker test.

Zoom, Teams and Google Meet

The web versions of Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet use the same browser access as this page, so a good result here means the same camera and mic will work there. The desktop apps keep their own device choice:

  • Zoom: Settings, Video and Audio. Pick the same camera and microphone you tested here.
  • Teams: Settings, Devices. Check Camera, Microphone and Speaker, or use the test call.
  • Google Meet: on the join screen, click the three dots, Settings, Audio and Video.

Only one app can use most webcams at a time. Stop the test here before you join the call, or the meeting app may say the camera is busy.

If something does not work

See the fixes on the webcam test and the mic test pages. The most common causes are a browser permission set to Block, a privacy shutter or mute switch, and another app holding the device.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions people ask most about this test.

How do I test my camera and microphone before a meeting?

Start both tests on this page. If you see yourself and the mic bar moves when you speak, both work. Record a short clip to check the sound.

Why does Zoom or Teams say my camera is in use?

Another app or browser tab is holding the camera. Stop the test on this page and close other video apps before joining.

Is my video or voice recorded?

No. Everything stays in your browser. The 5 second recording is only kept in memory until you close the page.
