Double click test

Click normally inside the box, about once a second. If a single click registers twice, the test shows a warning with the gap in milliseconds.

How to run the double click test

  1. Click the left button slowly and steadily inside the box, about once a second, 20 to 30 times.
  2. Do the same with the right and middle buttons if you suspect them too.
  3. Open the click log to see the gap between every click.

Normal single clicks show gaps of several hundred milliseconds. A faulty switch shows extra clicks with gaps under 80 ms, often under 20 ms. If you see even a few, the switch bounces. Set the limit to 120 ms for a stricter check, or 50 ms if you click very fast on purpose.

Why mice start double clicking

Most mice use small metal leaf switches. Over time the contacts wear, oxidise or lose spring tension, so they bounce when pressed and send two signals. Heavy use, especially in games, speeds this up. It is one of the most common mouse faults.

How to fix a mouse that double clicks

  1. Check the setting first. On Windows, open Control Panel, Mouse, Buttons, and set the double-click speed to the middle. Check that ClickLock is off. On Mac, open System Settings, Accessibility, Pointer Control, and check the double-click speed.
  2. Clean the button. Blow compressed air into the gap around the button and click it many times quickly.
  3. Update the mouse software. Gaming mice from Logitech, Razer, SteelSeries and others let you raise the debounce time in their app. A higher debounce time filters out the extra clicks.
  4. Check the warranty. Double clicking is a known wear fault on many mice and is often covered.
  5. Replace the switch. If you are handy with a soldering iron, a new micro switch costs very little and fixes the fault for good.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions people ask most about this test.

What causes a mouse to double click?

A worn or dirty switch that bounces when pressed, so one click sends two signals. A double-click speed set too slow in your system settings can also make normal clicks feel like double clicks.

Is a double clicking mouse covered by warranty?

Often, yes. It is a hardware fault. Check the warranty period from the maker, and note the timings from this test when you contact support.

Can software fix double clicking?

Partly. Gaming mouse software can raise the debounce time, and some free tools filter fast double clicks. The real fix is cleaning or replacing the switch.
