How to test your touch screen

  1. Press Full screen so the test covers the whole display, edges included.
  2. Slowly drag one finger across every square of the grid. Touched squares turn green. Squares that stay empty while you drag over them are dead zones.
  3. Draw long straight lines from edge to edge. A gap or jump in the line means the screen lost your finger for a moment.
  4. Put down two, three, five or more fingers. Most at once shows how many touch points the screen supports. Most phones track 10.

Touch screen not working right?

  • Clean the screen and dry your hands. Water and grease cause ghost touches and missed taps.
  • Remove the screen protector or case for a moment. A bubble or a thick protector can block touches, especially at the edges.
  • Restart the device. It clears most software glitches.
  • Charge with the original charger. Cheap chargers can cause jumpy touch input while charging.
  • Ghost touches (the screen reacts by itself) often point to damage or a lifting screen. If restarting does not help, it needs repair.

On Samsung phones you can also open the built-in test menu by dialling *#0*# in the phone app and choosing Touch. Not all models and carriers support it.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions people ask most about this test.

How do I test my touch screen for dead spots?

Open this page in full screen and drag a finger over every square. Any square that stays empty after you touch it is a dead spot.

How many touch points does my phone support?

Put as many fingers on the screen as you can. The Most at once number shows the maximum your device reported. Most phones and tablets support 10.

Does this work on an iPhone?

Yes. Safari supports the test. Full screen may not be available on iPhone, so turn the phone sideways and scroll the page until the touch area fills the screen.

Can I test a touchscreen laptop?

Yes. Open the page in your browser and use your fingers on the screen. A stylus also works and shows pressure where supported.
